Emotional Literacy Support Assistant

What is ELSA?

ELSA is an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant.

At Beacon, we are committed to supporting the whole child – academically, socially, and emotionally. We recognise that some pupils may face challenges that can affect their ability to engage fully in learning. Our Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA) provide targeted support to help children develop the skills they need to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and grow in confidence.

The Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA) programme is an initiative that was designed by Educational Psychologists to build the capacity of schools to support the social emotional and mental health needs of their pupils from within their own resources.

Our trained ELSA practitioners work with pupils on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, providing a safe, nurturing space where they can explore their feelings and develop practical strategies for coping with life’s challenges.

Areas of Support
Our ELSA sessions are tailored to meet the individual needs of pupils and may include:

  • Building self-esteem and resilience
  • Managing emotions such as anxiety, anger, or sadness
  • Developing social skills and friendships
  • Coping with loss, change, or family difficulties
  • Improving concentration and readiness to learn

How ELSA Works at Beacon

  • Pupils are usually referred for ELSA support by teachers, the SENDCo, or parents/carers.
  • Sessions take place weekly for a set number of weeks, depending on need.
  • Progress is reviewed regularly, and strategies are shared with teachers and families to ensure children continue to feel supported beyond their ELSA sessions.

Why it Matters
Our ELSA provision is part of Beacon's wider commitment to wellbeing, safeguarding, and inclusion. It complements our SEND provision and Pupil Premium strategy, ensuring that vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils receive the right support to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
