Lift Beacon Personal Development Curriculum

Lift Beacon Personal Development

At Lift Beacon, we view personal development as a cornerstone of our mission to nurture well-rounded, confident, and capable individuals. Our curriculum is designed to ensure every pupil grows academically, socially, emotionally, and morally, equipping them with the self-awareness, resilience, and interpersonal skills necessary for success in school and beyond.

Underpinning this ethos stand our five core values: Perseverance, Respect, Inclusion, Determination, and Excellence, which together form Beacon P.R.I.D.E. — a school to be proud of and proud to belong to.

A Whole-School Responsibility

Every member of staff plays a pivotal role in upholding our ethos, ensuring that personal development is not just a light-touch experience but a lived, daily reality for every child. Our school culture promotes respect, high achievement, and wellbeing, underpinned by strong routines and high expectations. This approach provides a safe, inclusive, and aspirational environment where children are free to explore their potential.

Our Personal Development curriculum is broad, ambitious, and carefully planned to promote progression across all year groups. It engages pupils in meaningful learning experiences and is designed to build character, develop emotional literacy, and cultivate life-long skills such as teamwork, leadership, and independence.

Pupil Leadership: Inspiring Future Leaders

Pupil leadership is a key feature of personal development at Lift Beacon. We provide structured and meaningful opportunities for children to take ownership and lead within the school.

Our four House Teams—Bradgate, Swithland, Jubilee, and Outwoods—are central to school life, promoting teamwork, healthy competition, and community spirit. Each house is led by a Year 6 House Captain, who models leadership and school values for younger pupils.

In addition to our house system, children take on a variety of other leadership roles, including:

  • Reading Ambassadors, who promote a love of reading and support reading across the school
  • Break and Lunchtime Play Leaders, who help foster inclusive, active, and positive playtimes
  • School Council Representatives, who are democratically elected to represent pupil voice and drive change

These roles help pupils grow in confidence, responsibility, and communication skills—key traits they will carry into secondary school and beyond.

Educational Visits: Bringing Learning to Life

We believe that trips and visits are vital for enriching the curriculum and enhancing personal growth. At Lift Beacon, our trips are carefully mapped to complement and deepen classroom learning, while also supporting children's social development, independence, and self-confidence.

Each trip serves multiple purposes:

  • Providing experiential learning tied directly to curriculum objectives
  • Encouraging teamwork and independence
  • Creating memorable experiences that build cultural capital
  • Boosting motivation, engagement, and even academic attainment

Examples include:

  • Reception trip to Stonehurst Farm, supporting their understanding of animals and the world around them.
  • KS1 visit to Twycross Zoo, linked to science learning on animals and habitats.
  • Children across the primary phase visit various local places of worship as part of their RE curriculum. These visits help them learn about different religious beliefs and practices, fostering understanding and respect for diverse cultures and worldviews.
  • Year 3 and Year 4 visit the local area and explore Queen’s Park as part of Art and DT and science topics.
  • Year 5 exploration of space and STEM at the National Space Centre.
  • The exciting Year 6 and SRB residential to Beaumanor Hall, where children build resilience, independence, and lasting friendships.

Our extended curriculum also includes a variety of workshops, themed weeks, outdoor learning opportunities in the school very own and newly improved Forest School. Where children are encouraged to foster positive experiences in nature. These benefits include increased confidence, improved social skills, enhanced communication, and a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural world.

There are a wide range of extra-curricular clubs, all designed to support holistic development.

Children have the opportunity to join French club, Cookery club, Yoga club and Calligraphy club to enhance their cultural experiences. There is also Running club, Multi sports club and Football club available, just to mention a few.

Preparing for the Future: Careers and Life Skills

In Upper Key Stage 2, we begin preparing pupils for life beyond primary school through our Preparation for Adulthood programme. This includes a growing focus on careers education, designed to inspire, inform, and equip pupils with an understanding of the world of work.

Highlights include:

  • A Careers Fair, where children meet professionals from a variety of fields
  • Opportunities to ask questions, reflect on their interests, and consider future possibilities
  • Lessons and workshops exploring skills for life, including teamwork, problem-solving, budgeting, communication, and goal-setting

By introducing these themes early, we empower children to begin identifying their strengths, nurturing their aspirations, and understanding the connection between their learning and future ambitions.
